While I am chucking rocks at established accounting practices that just don’t work for small businesses, monthly management accounts are a waste of time.  Until you get big enough to use them.

The thinking behind them is great.  You sit at a board meeting and discuss the accounts and adjust budgets and targets accordingly.  You communicate this clearly and logically to your Sales Director, your Operations Director and your Financial Director.  Everyone tootles off and executes the busy MD’s instructions.

The reality for most businesses is that these people are you, the owner. Also what really matters is cash flow and you can get this from your portal in real time.  If the data has been checked and reconciled by a good Bookkeeper.

Sure if a big decision is coming along you need to ask a few key questions, but only when they come up.  The reality for most of our clients is that you are paying for something you don’t use and don’t need.

For those businesses that really do need the monthly stuff, we can keep it simple and extract a couple of key metrics.  Trust me mostly this is cash flow….have I got enough cash to buy that machine or start that marketing campaign?

For most of our clients who run busy, growing and successful businesses It is better to get one targeted, focussed review.  Ideally this should be within the trading year.  You also have to understand and spend time on it.

So what does month nine mean?

Your company has a trading year.  If you open it on the 1st January, month nine is September.  You still have three months to do stuff before the book is closed on that year.

Self-Assessment Tax Returns (SATR)

This needs to be done by the 31st January every year for the previous tax year.  At the latest.  So that’s the January after the April 5th Tax Year ends.
